The Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association recently took a hard line, demanding that AI providers get permits to use news content. They’re specifically targeting “retrieval-augmented generation” services, which scrape online information to answer user queries.
Editors are worried about two big things: copyright infringement and accuracy. In some cases, AI systems have produced articles identical to original work, or—in a dangerous twist—hallucinated facts because they misunderstood the source material. The association pointed out that AI won’t correct its own mistakes, which creates a loop of misinformation.
