A Vietnamese company is using AI to create fake news targeting Canadians. The firm, HTV Network, runs a network of Facebook pages and websites spreading misleading content for profit. The investigation found hundreds of pages with millions of followers sharing fake stories.
How the Operation Works
The investigation uncovered close to 200 Facebook pages sharing sensationalist stories. These included false claims about Elon Musk banning Teslas in Canada or exploiting the Tumbler Ridge shooting. The pages were linked back to HTV Network in Vietnam.
HTV Network’s CEO, Ngo Anh Tan, was seen at a corporate event with a sign reading “Record Revenue.” The company claimed to be an international media firm with over 100 employees. However, the investigation showed a different story.
Similarity to Legitimate Media
